a new way of looking at... philosophy >> unbreakable: actualizing our potential - 2 |

the second step is to develop this skill of virtue. once the possibility exists that david may be something more than a mere mediocre person in the world, he begins to develop this skill using the three forms of development. the first is practice, in which he tries lifting greater weight bench presses, getting up to 350 pounds. the second is a teacher, where elijiah acts as a form of teacher to help develop his potential into action. the third is example, which he acts as his own example given that his case is pretty unique.
all of these different events help give him a sense of confidence to finally act, in which he tracks down a killer using his instinct for evil, and rescues two kids from a kidnapper who has killed their parents and taken the house for his own. he actualizes his potential and becomes a modern day superhero, almost directly in the way aristotle had meant it. an important point to take away from this is that we all have potentials to do extraordinary things. a very interesting thought put forward by elijiah is this world of mediocrity that we live in. we don't try to become anything great because we are constantly told that we cannot do great things. this kind of thought process leads to a deterioration of our potential and the simple ignorance of the potential that we have. david was able to become a great and virtuous person because he sought out to change the world once he realized his potential, with a bit of the fortune of being born that way, which fits nicely with aristotle as well. refuse to live in a world of mediocrity and begin to explore your potentials and chase your dreams. failure is only evidence that somebody tried something (i regret that i don't remember who said that at the present time, a thousand apologies to the author of that statement). we are not mediocre. we each have the potential to be great, and while we do not have the "superpowers" that david had, his tragic hero as an exaggeration reflects upon us our world and that we can actualize our potentials. 1 | 2 |
