huh?

how does one become better? we know that through christ a person is saved. and that faith without works is dead. how does it get better? is there some status symbol attached with having the most 'christian' toys? i'm sure heaven is loaded with all the contemporary christian rock bands playing 24-7 with nothing but perusal of christian fiction and everyone wears emblems across their holy vestiments of the white christ healing the many and crosses are everywhere. right.

it doesn't stop there, though. this spills over into not only affecting other people's lives (i have known people to get up and physically leave a room because secular music is playing instead of creed), but creates almost a competition for scoring brownie points with god. people get together and start imposing guilt on others for not having prayed every day, or not preaching the word at every moment, or moving through life constantly trying to save the masses. and the worst part about it is that it's not conscious. people start to feel like their contributions aren't enough. that what they are doing isn't going to cut the mustard. guilt permeates most of them. they aren't completely clean (you've been forgiven, get over it), they having praised god to the fullest (no one ever can), and they hear about others' accomplishments and feel even more guilt. guilt should not be part of the christian psyche. we mess up. we are forgiven. so it is written, so it shall be told.

all of this accumulates to the same street preachers who believe that only by public humiliation and devoting their entire life to god from the music to the clothes to the actions, etc... are going to go to heaven and somehow make it into the elite. where's the humility? where's the compassion? where's the love? in short, where's christ in all of this? he's gone. he doesn't exist. he's been replaced by the material possessions, the cultural contest to be a better christian (instead of more christ-like). protestants took christ off of the crucifix and replaced it with a cross. christians are supplementing christ with more hymns, more actions, more deeds... more ways of showing that they are going to make it to heaven (self-interest. christ was all about that. really). christ lost focus, and the neo-christian movement is only speeding the process. all for their own glorification. self-glorification. it's all ends with a final spurt onto the stomach of humanity, creating a mess no one should have to clean up, and once that it's happened, it happens again. dulling the shock. the horror. masturbation was never so self-gratifying when the ultimate prize is at stake.
