Click. Stephen lay on the polyester comforter, trying to get drunk. Remote in hand he was flipping between a Tony Robbins infomercial and soft-core porn on the motel’s cable system. So it’s come to this, he thought. Waves of disgust rolled and broke in his gut. Summer, Calvin, and he planned this trip back in the fall. He remembered it well. They were at Summer and Erica’s new apartment, her housewarming party. They sat on the floor among boxes and haphazard furnishings when somehow they landed on the subject of death, and what they wanted to do before it happened. (Now that he thought about it, he had brought up the subject, surprise.) Click. "Hooters," Calvin said. "What about them?" Summer said. "He wants to get implants before he shuffles off this mortal coil," Stephen said. "No, the restaurant. When I finish my business degree I’m gonna open up my own Hooters franchise. Honeys everywhere and every game worth watching. It’ll be awesome." Erica, who was wiping down the cupboards in the kitchen, overhead this and let a "Tch" escape. "One thing would be to snowboard somewhere really nice, somewhere I’ve never been before. Colorado’s nice and all, but I wanna go farther west like Utah or the Northwest somewhere," Summer said, passing the blunt to Stephen. "Yea, no kidding. A friend of mine lives in Oregon and says that Mt. Hood is the schiznine. Totally carve able," Stephen said. He wasn’t sure if it was actually ‘the schiznine’. Calvin was turning the CD rack. "What’s on the stereo?" he said. "Massive Attack," Summer said. "You got any Pantera?" he said. "Ugh, are you kidding? Summer, if you do I’m breaking the lease. Is there such a thing as a renter’s annulment?" piped up Summer’s pensive blonde roommate. "No, I don’t have any Pantera. Too much screaming," Summer said to both. "Aw come on, ‘Fucking hostile!’ you gotta love it!" "No I don’t. So, should we go again this year? I should have some of my student loans to carry me over," Stephen said. "Should we? We had so much fun last year! I don’t think my brother will make it. He’s got work lined up or something. Hey Erica, you should come with us." Summer said over he shoulder to the kitchen. ‘Oh, I don’t know," The whole reason I’m on hiatus from school is to save some cash. Stephen, could you put this dish on the top shelf for me? The stool is buried somewhere." "Yea, it’s probably in Steve’s ass," Calvin said. "Oh my God! That was so mature!" Erica shot. "Quit fiddling in there and hit this," Summer said, taking the blunt from Calvin. |
